Villa Leopolda, France

This majestic villa located on the French Riviera is known for its lush gardens and impressive design.

Villa Leopolda, situated on the French Riviera’s Cote d’Azur, stands as one of the world’s most prestigious and luxurious properties. This majestic residence sprawls across an extensive estate of approximately 15 hectares, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding French Riviera.

History

The villa boasts a rich history, constructed in the 1930s for King Leopold II of Belgium, from whom it derives its name.

Being the favourite of the king (commonly referred to as mistress or courtesan) sometimes holds more advantages than being the consort. King Leopold II of Belgium was so enamoured with Blanche Delacroix that as a testament to his love, he commissioned the sumptuous Villa Leopolda, situated in Villefranche-sur-Mer, on the Cote d’Azur. The property is an architectural gem from the Belle Époque dating back to 1901.

Despite having 14 bathrooms, 11 bedrooms, a helipad, private sanitation facilities, an outdoor kitchen, an impressive pool, three basements, several rooms for boilers, coal, and firewood, and several guest houses, what makes it particularly attractive are the 15 hectares of land hosting one of Europe’s most beautiful gardens with over 1,500 different plants. All this opulence served as a backdrop in the films ‘The Red Shoes’ (1948) and ‘To Catch a Thief’ (1955), which was the springboard for Grace Kelly to meet Rainier III of Monaco.

When Leopold II passed away, his nephew Albert I of Belgium ordered the dismissal of that mistress known socially as ‘the queen of Congo’ because, at that time, the king, a macro genocidal ruler, turned the Congo Free State into his feudal enclosure where he treated its inhabitants as slaves who provided him with the exclusive monopoly of rubber and elephant tusks.

For this reason, the monarch amassed one of the great fortunes of the era, which he lavished on his mistress, who bore two of his children, Lucien and Philippe, delaying the departure of the train from Paris to Brussels because Blanche didn’t have enough time to buy haute couture designs. His grandson was King Baudouin, married to the Spanish Fabiola de Mora y Aragón.

During World War II, Villa Leopolda became a field hospital just like Highclere Castle, known from the series ‘Downton Abbey.’

When World War II ended, this elegant property had different owners, the most notable being the aristocrat and businessman Gianni Agnelli, one of Italy’s wealthiest men, who used it as his summer residence with his wife Marella, and years later, the billionaire banker Edmond Safra, who died in an arson attack in his apartment at the La Belle Époque palace in Monaco in 1999. In his lifetime, Lily inherited this mansion considered for several years as the most expensive property on the planet.

Architecture

Regarding its architecture, it’s an extraordinary blend of classical styles and delicate details, with wonderful gardens, terraces, fountains, and lush green areas complementing its buildings.

Inside, Villa Leopolda houses a series of luxurious lounges, which are the most impressive part of these villas, as well as its large rooms adorned with opulence and artistic details, along with an extraordinary collection of art and antiques. Its high ceilings, elaborate architectural details, and high-quality finishes highlight the magnificence of this residence.

Apart from the main house, the property includes numerous outbuildings, pools, tennis courts, a greenhouse, and extensive landscaped gardens that stretch to the edge of the Mediterranean Sea.

Villa Leopolda has been home to various famous personalities over the years, and its historical value and scenic beauty make it a symbol of exclusivity and luxury on the French Riviera.

In recent decades, its value has fluctuated between 325 and 750 million euros. In 2010, Lily tried to sell it to the second richest man in Russia, Mikhail Prokhorov, for 390 million euros, so the businessman made a deposit of 40 million. At the last moment, he wanted to cancel the contract, and upon the owner’s refusal to return the deposit, they ended up in court. The judge ruled in favour of Lily Safra, who donated the money to philanthropic causes.

Since its construction 120 years ago, Villa Leopolda remains one of the most luxury villas in the world and the most coveted enclave on the French Riviera.”
